Plant Ecophysiology and Bioactive Molecules Laboratory

Our Expertise

Our laboratory is dedicated to the study of plants and their properties. We cover the entire value chain of plant resources, from understanding their functioning (ecophysiology) to the extraction and analysis of their active compounds.

Our Analytical Workflow

  1. Extraction: We master a wide range of extraction techniques to isolate target molecules:
    • Essential Oils: Extraction by hydrodistillation (Clevenger apparatus) and by microwave (innovative microwave extractor).
    • Organic Extracts: Extraction using Soxhlet apparatus, ultrasonic baths, and sonicator probes (sonication).
    • Fixed Oils: Obtained by mechanical cold pressing using an oil press.
  2. Purification and Concentration: Post-extraction, we purify and concentrate our samples using advanced equipment:
    • Rotary evaporator (Rotavapor) for solvent removal.
    • Freeze-dryer (Lyophilizer) for cold concentration via sublimation.
    • Ovens for controlled drying.
  3. Analysis and Assays: The final step involves characterizing and quantifying the bioactive molecules:
    • Phytochemical Assays: We perform assays for key secondary metabolites, including total polyphenols, flavonols, and tannins.
    • Biological Activity Evaluation: We measure the antioxidant potential of the extracts.
    • Instrumentation: All these quantitative analyses are performed using a microplate photometer reader, ensuring precision and high throughput.
